To begin with, we believe that more than one day a year should be dedicated to romance, but there is something special about the traditional month of love that generates a special kind of energy.
Where did the month of love come from?
While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate St. Valentine’s death or burial, which is said to have occurred around the year 270, others believe that the Christian church chose this date to “Christianize” the pagan Lupercalia festival.[Source: History.com]
Geoffrey Chaucer, a medieval English poet, made liberties with history by setting his poetic characters in imaginary historical settings that he presented as real. There is no evidence of Valentine’s Day celebrations prior to a poem Chaucer wrote around 1375.
In his poem “Parliament of Foules,” He associates St. Valentine’s Day with a tradition of courtly love; an association that didn’t exist until after his poem became well-known. Birds (and people) gather on February 14 to find a mate, according to the poem.
“For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh there to choose his spouse,” wrote Chaucer. He may have originated the modern-day celebration.
