Happy Human Rights Day South Africa! The African Cannamed Co decided to dive deeper into this day and try and understand more in relation to our history and our human rights for our beloved industry.
According to Office Holidays.com
The holiday records the establishment of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
“The SAHRC’s mission is to promote human rights; respect, protection, development, and attainment, and monitor and assess human rights in South Africa.”
The SAHRC was established on March 21, 1996. 35 years after anti-apartheid demonstrators were gunned down by police on March 21, 1960, in Sharpeville, Soweto. The Native Laws Amendment Act of 1952 regulated Africans’ movement to cities and mandated that all Africans carried identity passbooks on them. Failure to produce the book was a punishable offense. The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) proposed launching an anti-Pass campaign on March 21, 1960. Campaigners gathered at police stations in Johannesburg townships. Quickly dispersed by South African police. During South Africa’s apartheid period, this tragic day became known as Sharpeville Day.
There have been some big moves in these areas of natural health products and related to our human rights here which we bringing into focus. This affects our CBD business as well as our partners Cancure Wellness, The Nutri-Balance Centre, and others in the industry.
Regulation of Natural Health Products
A pivotal court case involving the regulation of natural health products took place in early March. All about natural medicine licensing and SAHPRA. People are now awaiting the outcome of the pending judgment.
TNHA issued the following press release: REPOST @TNHA: Natural Health Products case heard in the Supreme Court – Fields of Green for ALL
What we found sombrely interesting in the above article. If the joint appeal is upheld in court we can expect a decrease in the stock of our favourite natural medicine on shelves. The real threat is some products people have relied on for decades will no longer be around. Companies considered illegal fail to meet the necessary pharmaceutical manufacturing, import, wholesale, or distribution licenses. The penalties for selling ‘unregistered medicines’ or selling if unlicensed are severe. With substantial fines and up to ten years in prison.
There has been a rise in the use of natural medicine in South Africa. We as South Africans must seize our right to natural, safe, and affordable medicines along with our human rights to choose what we consume. Our core human right is to practice our cultures and traditions, freely, democratically.
Traditional and Natural Health Alliance
The TNHA is the only national association affiliated with the ANHPSA that is actively litigating to defend South Africans’ health rights to choose non-orthodox natural health products, as well as defending the natural health product industry in court.
“The THNA is the only organization that has prohibited allopathic pharmaceutical companies from participating in its admissions procedures, ensuring the genuine natural health product industry is represented.”
If you own a natural health products manufacturing, wholesale, importation, distribution, or retail company (shop), consider becoming a THNA supporting member. Let us work together to protect the tools of natural professions. ANHPSA is led by Chairman Anthony Rees.
We salute you Anthony sir!

What threatens our Human Rights in the industry
The threat to our human rights remains legislation and the law, which in South Africa’s case is profoundly corrupt. The police will always be the challenge in the progression of the plant. Activists around the world continue to fight the war on drugs. Know your human rights as a South African citizen. Seek your truth. Support legit local businesses and the natural medicine movement in South Africa. Explore and understand the natural medicine industry offerings and alternatives to big pharma out for profit.
Take a look at BMC’s study of the effect of legislation and the role of naturopaths in South Africa. Extracted from this article:
Naturopaths’ broader role in South Africa
South Africa has a dual healthcare system, one public and one private. All participants expressed a desire to see naturopaths play a larger role in the healthcare system. The goal to incorporate naturopathy into the public healthcare system. It was felt that the public is unaware of the profession of naturopathy. The feeling is the professional associations do not adequately promote the profession to the public.
African Cannamed supports Natural Medicine
The reason we got into this industry was to create health, not patients!
Our purpose remains “Deliver the highest quality phytocannabinoids as quickly as possible to our customers.” The African Cannamed Co was created in the belief in alternative treatment using Cannabis Oil and the other rich nutrients of the Cannabis/Hemp Plant.
It is your right as a consumer.
To know where your CBD oil comes from.
We are passionate about our purpose and delivering premium quality CBD oil to our loyal clients around the world.
This human rights day consider your purchasing power. Put your money where your mouth is. Start aligning your lifestyle to your values and purpose or as Simon Sinek says, your why.
Our why includes supporting small ethical businesses. Not fly-by-night companies trying to profit off an industry that’s regulations are not crystal clear like turquoise waters. More murky, muddy, and infested like Hartebeespoort Dam! Do your research. Know where your products come from and if they are certified. Pay attention to what is happening in natural medicine. Know your human rights and let us continue to strive for the betterment of these for all!
